Hi Friends! It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to The Riverside Center for the Performing Arts.
As we begin our 27th Season, we enter it with strength, resilience and gratitude. Theater Operations is now a 501(C)(3), nonprofit organization. This allows us to join the ranks of all the professional regional theater companies in the country. It also allows us to fortify our theater by being able to accept grants, sponsorships, and donations at all levels. Riverside Strong allows us to look to the future with confidence while building additional streams of revenue.
The performing arts are an essential component of the health and well-being of a community. Riverside takes that responsibility very seriously and relishes the role that we play in our region and community.
We have become a safe space for people to leave their cares behind for a few hours and be transported to another time and place while participating in quality entertainment. “It is not the voice that commands the story: it is the ear.” We need you, and we are glad you are here. You are just as much a part of the production as the performers and musicians on the stage. That is why we choose these shows for you!
This Season brings a terrific mixture of fun and rock and roll with Heartbreak Hotel, epic with Jesus Christ Superstar and To Kill a Mockingbird, edgy and riveting with the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Next to Normal and classic with The Sound of Music and White Christmas. Our Children's Theatre is back in full force with Seussical Jr. in February and Junie B Jones in the Fall. As I always say, “We all get to do what we love to do here at Riverside because all of you love coming here to support us.”
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Thanks for your generosity. Thank you for supporting the live arts!

I remember when I was in in the 7th grade and first heard the Jesus Christ Superstar recording, a brown double disc album with two gold angels on the cover. I was intrigued by the music paired with the story of the last days of Christ and instantly fell in love with it. Who knew that a few years later this recording would transition into a monumental work that would change musical-theater history.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were influenced by groups like the Beatles, Pink Floyd and David Bowie, and through that concept recording, created a theatrical experience unlike any of its time. This is the inspiration for our production. The focus is on the music, and authentic music making.
I have chosen to set the beginning of the show in a recording studio and allow the music to transport us to a time and place of storytelling. When casting the show, we looked for individuality and authenticity: a group of voices that complement each other, and never looked for actors whose greatest strength is playing somebody else. The setting, although representative, is left to the imagination. We wanted this to be a movement- and dance-inspired production creating a cross between a dance recital and a rock concert, as well as showcasing our wonderful orchestra as story tellers.
I hope Riverside audiences will be exhilarated by the music and thrilled by the electricity of the performances. By making this Jesus Christ Superstar immersive, it is my hope that we create an intense connection between performers, musicians and the audience, so all feel present and part of a live music concert.
