Director's Note

We are so excited to bring this production of James and the Giant Peach to you today. Working with material grounded in Roald Dahl's writing is always an exciting challenge. On stage you need to see a larger than life peach roll around and splash in the ocean, a helicopter attack, seagulls swarming and sharks biting! There are plenty of fantastical elements that help connect with our younger audiences, but what I love about Dahl's work is that beyond the whimsy we must deal with some very real and harsh truths about the world we live in.

Highlighting these truths for James was a focus in this production, because we are all forced to overcome hurdles right now. Pairing down some design elements that might be over the top in some productions allows us to focus on James' journey and how finding new family, speaking up, and growing confident, allows him to grow into something as remark-u-lously fan-tas-ma-rific as the peach. Instead of big puppets, we use many 'found objects' to uncover the world and journey he goes on. The nasty aunts are more colorful and over the top so the insects are much more human and warm. It's obvious that James should be drawn and comforted by his new friends!

A small but mighty ensemble jumps from character to character, even object to animal to invite the audience to utilize their creativity while watching the show. What allows us to focus on strong story telling and acting is that we can always trust young audiences to 'fill the gaps' with their incredible imaginations.

So please sit back, relax, careful of the crocodile tongues, and enjoy the show!
