HEAD OVER HEELS Director's Notes

Every time the Go-Go’s come up in my playlist shuffle it immediately transports me back to the early 80’s and my student years at the University of Texas, when I fell in love with the infectious music of these female rockers. The Go-Go’s are interconnected with my love affair with Austin in those early days, seeing them in concert at the Erwin Center and at other venues, with my first serious girlfriend—and boyfriend (simultaneously)…well, it was college after all. We trekked to Palmer Auditorium, City Coliseum, Club Foot, Raul’s, Southpark Meadow and 6th Street to hear our favorite 80’s bands, many that we saw first on MTV. During this time, I was cast as a dancer in my first professional music video for The LeRoi Brothers, who landed in heavy rotation with their cover of Treat Her Right.

We spent lots of time at Barton Springs, and the music of the Go-Go’s will always remind me of being in that crisp water over endless summers. It is for this reason that I asked our Scenic Designer Michelle Ney to imagine with me if we could create this musical’s environment only using pool innertubes, floats and inflatables. The shapes and colors of these summer floats mimic the brightly colored 80’s graphics that populated the era’s pop culture. This musical, like the band that inspired it, has such a playful nature, and just as Shannon Sedwick brought the pool indoors to Esther’s Follies on 6th Street over 40 years ago, I want to bring the fun of a great pool party inside the Topfer this summer.

The extraordinary joy of having our hometown Go-Go Kathy Valentine, not only directing our band, but playing onstage in this performance, is a big DREAM come true! The cast, crew and I have been pinching ourselves every day that we get to create this show with the artist who wrote the hits we have been singing most of our lives, and blazed a trail through rock and roll with her bandmates that inspire countless young women to pick up guitars and drumsticks and start a band. At ZACH we share with the Go-Go’s a desire to celebrate individual choice and personal freedom to love whomever you love in whatever way you choose to identify. YOU are BEAUTIFUL. And to paraphrase the wise Queen Gynecia in HEAD OVER HEELS, No true paradise remains forever. We must craft a new beat from our hearts, and create a place that is more tolerant and generous for all.  WE GOT THE BEAT!
