A Note from the Director

Riverside is honored to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Sound of Music with a fresh, new production, hoping that you will experience it as if you are seeing it for the first time.

This beloved musical centers on Maria’s journey from postulant to the heart of the von Trapp family—a story of resilience, love, and the transformative power of music.

Set against the gathering shadow of Nazism, our staging emphasizes the contrast between fear and hope. Through intimate scenes and expansive musical moments, we invite you to witness how warmth, trust, and song can illuminate even the darkest times.

Here, music is more than melody—it is freedom, connection, and sanctuary. Whether it’s the playful learning of “Do-Re-Mi” or the soaring resolve of “Climb Every Mountain,” each number is crafted to feel both deeply personal and joyously communal.

Our design reflects this emotional arc with an expansive, open environment that reinforces Maria’s internal transformation and the family’s blossoming unity.

Maria’s path is one of authenticity and empathy; Captain Von Trapp softens gradually, guided by music and proximity; the children’s energy remains charmingly genuine, growing naturally through their bond.

Ultimately, this production is a celebration of courage, familial love, and the healing power of song. I hope each note, gesture, and moment on stage resonates with this spirit.

This brilliant cast, crew and creative team thank you for joining us—let the music fill your heart.
