Reading the Oresteia as part of a classical education it was easy to name the heroes and villains of the story. It is the black and white tale of the vengeful wife and the infallible husband, and the journey that follows of the valiant son attempting to right the wrongs of society and procure justice. But what is justice and who is in charge of exacting it?
In a time where it can feel like our justice system is all too flawed, we wanted to explore the foundations of our modern democracy in a flipped sense. What if Clytemnestra is the hero? What if Agamemnon is not as courageous as we thought him to be? And what if the Furies, instead of being dark hideous monsters, are bold, colorful, and witty spirits with just a dash of 90’s girl power? In daring to see the world as it could be and not as it has always been dictated to us, we find the strength of conviction to make real and lasting change, and hopefully find a pathway to a new world.
This performance is dedicated to the fierce protectors of justice all around us, even though they might not look like what we always imagined.

Director
Carol makes plays to change the stories we believe in because it’s the best way she knows to change the world we live in. Her work has been broadcast on BET (“Gap,” dir. Ryan Coogler) and NPR (“The Story,” dir. Martin Esslin) and staged on five continents from The Magic Theatre of San Francisco to Peking University in Beijing. Carol is Professor Emerita at Saint Mary’s College of California and the co-founder of Those Women Productions in Berkeley.
I am thrilled that Rebecca Haley Clark is helming the upcoming production of Just Deserts with the talented Santa Cruz Shakespeare interns. A dark comedy about the mythological (and misogynist) origins of the Western justice system, this play feels even more relevant to me now than it did when it premiered eight years ago.
