Welcome to our production of The Marriage of Figaro. Figaro is one of the great operas in the operatic repertory and I am delighted to say that we have been able to introduce this great work to our singers and our community several times during my tenure as Director of UK Opera Theatre. Because The Marriage of Figaro is a standard repertory work, it is consistently done at opera houses around the world. The fact that our students get to learn it in the university environment, learn the recitative style, sing it in Italian, and work with a professional cast and crew is what sets UKOT apart from many university opera programs.
We are happy to introduce our stage director, Christopher Burchett as he is making his directorial debut with UK Opera Theatre. Chris came to UK after a nearly 30-year career as a professional opera singer, and he is currently working on his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree here at the University of Kentucky. Because of his tremendous experience in the opera world, we were excited to offer him the position of guest stage director for this production. He has done an incredible job along with Grace Ashley, our assistant stage director, who is also a doctoral student with a long history of university teaching.
We have an exciting season of activities for you this year. They include the Young Singer’s Competition which is also happening this weekend, the Metropolitan Opera Competition which will happen on November 16, OperaLex’s Grand Encore Affair on November 23, and Alltech’s Celebration of Song with two performances this year on December 15 at 2:30p and 5:00p. In the new year we will present Sanctuary Road at the Lexington Opera House March 7-9 as part of the 250Lex Celebration, and a staged workshop of A Nation of Others on March 13, and of course Grand Night in June. Tickets are on sale for all of these events, so get your tickets NOW at ukoperatheatre.org.
Of course, we would not be able to do this without you, our beloved community of supporters. It is because of you that we are able to do very special things for our talented students at UK and for our community in Lexington. We can exist and present the level of programming we do because of philanthropic gifts from individuals and organizations. As you are considering your philanthropic gifts throughout the year, please consider UK Opera Theatre. Thank you in advance!
Enjoy The Marriage of Figaro!
