We’ve done several shows here at Barter that celebrate the music that’s come from Appalachia: Keep on the Sunny Side about the Carter family, Man of Constant Sorrow about the Stanley Brothers, Always, Patsy Cline, and many others. The reason we love doing these shows is because they truly celebrate what it means to be from this region: the good and the bad, the beauty and the hardness.
Hardness is a part of Appalachia, and while Johnny Cash was not born in this region, he married into it when he fell in love with June Carter. One of the big reasons why Johnny and his music resonate with us, is because he was real. He had a hard life. He grew up poor, learned to sing gospel songs with his mama, suffered loss, went to jail, battled addiction, and on the other side of that, found his faith and became a champion of the forgotten. He famously played shows in prisons to make sure the incarcerated weren’t forgotten. He founded an SOS Children’s village in Jamaica which provides homes for children who lack parental care. In the words of his daughter, Roseanne Cash, “Johnny Cash was a man whose heart beat with the rhythm of love and social justice.”
The story of Johnny Cash, both sinner and saint, reminds us that it’s never too late to be a good man.
Above all, there is the music. And what all these Appalachian musical stories have in common is this: we have music to lift us above the hardness of our daily lives. Sharing stories through music is unifying, hopeful, and it helps us realize we’re not alone. And today, if only for a couple of hours, we can lift you above the hardness with the music of Johnny Cash, then we’ll know we’ve succeeded in honoring his memory.
