Ariane Helou
Dramaturg, King Lear

Dr. Ariane Helou is thrilled to be back for her tenth season of Shakespeare in Santa Cruz! Previously at SCS/SSC: as dramaturg, Henry VI Part 1, The Winter’s Tale, Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Hamlet, The Liar, The Mandrake; as language consultant, Henry V, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Other regional credits include LA Opera (dramaturg and co-librettist for premiere streaming production of The Anonymous Lover by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges); Gunshot Medley: Part 1 at Rogue Machine Theatre (Los Angeles); and Master Class at The Jewel Theatre (Santa Cruz). Ariane is Dramaturg/Producer of the Los Angeles-based theater company Collaborative Artists Bloc and Artistic Producer of the choral ensemble Artes Vocales. In addition to her work in the arts, Ariane is a scholar of early modern drama and music and a former faculty member at UCLA and UC Santa Cruz, where she also earned her PhD in Literature. She is the co-editor, with Julia Reinhard Lupton, of Romeo and Juliet, Adaptation and the Arts: Cut Him Out in Little Stars (The Arden Shakespeare, 2022).
