Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten! Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Something Rotten! has been lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years.”
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self — and all that jazz!
Something Rotten! started its road to Broadway as a shared idea between brothers Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick. They joined book writer John O’Farrell to complete a set of songs that were presented in 2010 to producer Kevin McCollum (whose previous Broadway credits as a producer included The Drowsy Chaperone and Rent). A workshop, with Casey Nicholaw attached to direct, was presented in 2014.
The workshop participants initially planned a pre-Broadway production at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. However, producer McCollum expedited the process when the St. James Theatre on Broadway became available. Fresh off the positive reviews from the workshop, the show bypassed the tryout production in Seattle and went straight to Broadway.
After a month of previews, Something Rotten! officially opened at the St. James Theatre on April 22, 2015. The show received 10 Tony Award nominations that season – including Best Musical – with Christian Borle winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role In A Musical for his portrayal of Shakespeare. After 708 performances, Something Rotten! closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
A national tour of the show began in Schenectady, New York, on Jan. 10, 2017, and went on to play nearly 50 cities across America (including a three-week stop at the Connor Palace Theatre in Cleveland). This tour closed in Providence, Rhode Island, in May of 2018. A second, non-Equity tour opened in September of that same year, and it played in additional U.S. cities – including two nights at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall – before closing in Seoul, Korea, in June 2019.
