“We got the spirit/You got to hear it/Under the sea.”
Those are but a few of the dazzling lyrics in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, but they perfectly capture the experience of hundreds of Dallasites throughout the past several months, as people from all over our city have come together to tell a shared story of love, joy and community.
Hans Christian Anderson wrote the fairytale of a mermaid who sacrifices everything for love in 1837. In 1989, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken added glorious lyrics and music to accompany the brilliant animation in the now classic Disney animated film. Thirty-five years later, here in Dallas, we’re retelling this timeless story with a company of artists who lift my spirit as they act, sing and dance to bring this classic story to new life.
This special pageant production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid is the culmination of DTC’s year-round Public Works program. Featuring fifteen professional actors and an ensemble of one hundred people from across our city, this production is a celebration of art and community that seeks to welcome the people of Dallas into the heart of Dallas Theater Center.
DTC launched its first pageant production in 2017, with the support of the AT&T Performing Arts Center and SMU’s Ignite Arts Dallas, and the inspiration of Lear DeBessonet and the Public Theater in New York. Since then, under the inspired vision of Brandi Giles, artists from DTC have been partnering with organizations that help our city thrive – Bachman Lake Together, Jubilee Park and Community Center, Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Metrocare, and City of Dallas Park and Recreation’s Janie C. Turner and Beckley-Saner Recreation Centers. We offer free theater classes at each of our partner organizations for people of all ages, and, in the summer, we bring together people from all of these neighborhoods to create a musical theater production as vibrant, diverse, and full of life as Dallas itself.
At Dallas Theater Center, we believe that theater is essential to our community, and that community is essential to our theater. Theater belongs to all of us, not only a select few. Participation in the cultural life of the community is the birthright of everyone in a democracy. Our city is at its best when all of us have the opportunity to create, and we are strongest when we come together with a shared purpose.
Throughout the past several months – as community members have contributed to the creation of the set and costumes, volunteered to assist auditions and rehearsals, and come together as actors, many for the first time in their lives – I have been filled with joy and inspired by how much we all have in common.
I hope that in watching this production you will be overcome by the beauty and skill of the people of Dallas. I hope you will be inspired by a vision in which each individual can contribute to something larger than themself. And I hope you will experience hope for our city that has such wonderful people in it.

Dallas Theater Center Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge the land beneath our feet as the ancestral home of many Indigenous Peoples including the Caddo, Wichita, Tawakoni, and Kiikaapoi, as well as the tribes that may have lived here and roamed the area – including Comanche, Kiowa and Apache – and those indigenous people whose names we don’t know anymore. We honor, revere and respect those who were stewards of this land long before we made it our home. We also acknowledge the neighborhood we inhabit as one of the original Freedman’s towns of Dallas built by those who were enslaved by European colonization.
